Eumetnet & EU

On behalf of its members, EIG EUMETNET maintains and develops close links with the EU Institutions, mainly the European Council, the European Parliament, the European Commission and its Agencies. This contributes to an increased awareness of the existing capabilities of the European meteorological infrastructure (EMI) among the EU Institutions.

The core activities of EIG EUMETNET, performed through our cooperative programmes, are highly relevant to a large number of EU policies.

We therefore believe that EIG EUMETNET can significantly contribute to the successful implementation of these EU policies in various domains such as mobility and transport, agriculture, environment, climate action, energy, health, … and to the EU action in the field of external relations (development, enlargement, humanitarian aid,…).

The first concrete examples of this collaboration are taking shape in the framework of GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) and SESAR (Single European Sky ATM Research).

Within GMES, the meteorological products and infrastructures are critical to the development of the planned core services (monitoring of the atmosphere, marine environment and climate change).

Aviation is an important European issue for EUMETNET. AVIMET is the specific working group that addresses issues of common interest within the aeronautical meteorological (MET) domain. In addition, the Aviation Affairs Manager supports its work as a dedicated resource within the EUMETNET Secretariat. Several aviation projects: SESAR WP 11.1.2, SESAR Topmet and FP7 WEZARD, contribute to the new ATM scenario in Europe. In particular the achievement of SESAR’s objectives in terms of improvement of the European air traffic management system relies on the essential contribution of the meteorological community.


The ambition of EIG EUMETNET is to increase the number of mutually beneficial partnerships with EU Institutions in the various fields identified above.
